This design is one of the most versatile types of impervious graphite heat
exchangers. Rows of holes are drilled through graphite blocks both horizontally and
vertically to form the process and service channels. Heat is transferred by
conduction through the impervious graphite left between the rows of holes which
separate the mediums being used. Graphite block heat exchangers consist of a
stack of blocks encapsulated in a steel shell.
Features of BIS Design
1. The BISHEX is constructed of identically formed impervious Graphite monolithic
Blocks, having two sets of passages – radial and axial. Heat is exchanged between
any two fluids in the same block. The blocks are isostatically molded rather than
extruded, for the greater thermal conductivity i.e. after making impervious graphite
blocks have resin content approx. 4% (Manufactured by BIS), whereas as graphite
tubes have resin contents 25- 30%. Thereby making graphite tubes to thermal shock
prone.
2. Corrosive fluids contact only the impervious Graphite Blocks having complete
resistance to all acids, alkalis and solvents with the exception of a few strong
oxidizing agents.
3. Extreme Turbulence Provided High Efficiency at all Velocities (Prevent Scale
Deposits etc.) in BIS make Graphite Block type Heat Exchangers.
Advantages Over Shell & Tube Type Heat Exchanger:
⮞ The unit is completely flexible because additional blocks can be added to increase the effective Heat Exchanger area in steps of two Blocks.
⮞ Identical blocks are stacked in compression, providing a compact unit having high heat exchanger area for weight and volume.
⮞ High strength formed blocks, held in compression, provided great strength and ruggedness. There are no fragile tubes and no cemented joints.
⮞ Heat Exchange area can be easily increased by the simple addition of two standard blocks.
⮞ Units may be installed in series, series parallel or parallel combinations. The units may be suspended from the bolt holes provided, by a frame work or
any floor structure.
⮞ Breakage in BISHEX Blocks can be identify easily, just by removing the MS Shell and giving Hydro pressure from process side (Axial Hole) replace the
damaged BISHEX Block. No reduction in HTA, no product loss. No change in process time.
Due to standard interchangeable parts and high efficiency the BISHEX is lowest in cost for Heat Exchanger accomplished.
Main applications:
⮞ Cooling, condensation, heating, evaporation, and absorption of ultra-corrosive chemicals.
⮞ Heat transfer between two ultra-corrosive chemicals
⮞ Best suited for single-purpose units
